Chapter 1

Pari Malhotra

At night, Pari was sitting on the swing in the balcony of her room, thinking she was going to turn 23 tomorrow. She thought, Even if I turn 23, I'm still a caged bird.

I don't know whether my family members are protecting me or caging me, she wondered. But the only thing my Papa and my brothers ever say is, “You are a gift from God to this family, and we should protect you. Your safety is our responsibility. We promised ourselves that you will stay happy.”

Little did they know, I want to live my life independently. I don't want to depend on anyone. I shouldn’t wait for someone to protect me — I should learn to protect myself. I want to live my life as I wish, not just inside the house but outside too.

But what can I do when my Papa, Maa, and my brothers say, “You're not safe outside. You can’t roam around”? But

I’m lucky for one thing — that my parents let me go out for studies. But even during school and college, Papa appointed bodyguards. He even bought the school and college in my name — the ones where I was going to study. But no one knows that I own them.

I used to go there just to study and come back home. I was not allowed to go anywhere else.

When I was a kid, I used to think, I want to be a bird so that I can fly. But I never knew that I would become the caged bird.

Thinking about all this, Pari went back to her room and slept.

Yuvaan Rajput

Yuvaan was thinking about the angelic voice he had heard three years ago, but he still hadn’t been able to find out who she was. He began to doubt the power he held — if he couldn’t find a girl, what was the point?

Rishi Rajvansh, Yuvaan’s best friend, said seriously, “You’re thinking about a girl? Just her voice? And even after three years, you’re still trying to find her? You don’t even have the slightest bit of information about her!”

Rishi continued, “Wait, wait — oh no! Now I understand why Yuvaan can’t find that girl. It’s because God is keeping her away from this useless creature!” he said and burst into laughter.

"Suddenly, someone threw a pillow at him — one that was lying on the couch." That someone was none other than Vikrant Rajvansh, Yuvaan’s best friend and Rishi’s twin brother.

“Shut your mouth,” Vikrant said to Rishi.

Then Vikrant turned to Yuvaan. “You didn’t tell us about this. We only found out when you were scolding your assistant — otherwise, we wouldn’t have known. Now we want to know everything. Tell us.”

Even Rishi became serious, nodded, and said, “Yes, Yuvaan, tell us. We’ll help you to find her — whoever she is, wherever she is now.”
